Bunk beds have long been a staple of shared bedrooms and are space-saving solution for modern homes. These versatile pieces of furniture not only offer practicality but also a touch of fun and adventure to your child’s bedroom. Whether you're looking to maximise space to play or create a cosy guest space, bunk beds are a fantastic choice.
What types of bunk beds are available?
There are various types of bunk beds available, the most common is made up of two standard 3ft single beds that are stacked on top of each other and can be separated when the children are older.
To stimulate your children’s imagination, we have jungle themed safari and adventure bunk beds, plus novelty bunk beds such as a London double decker bunk and a vintage Campervan bunk.
If 2 bed bunks are not enough for your children’s sleeping requirements, we have a selection of triple bunks with 3 single beds stacked on top of each other, allowing you to maximise your floor space.
If you are looking for something a little different, or don’t want a triple stacked bunk but want to sleep up to three, there are bunks that have a small double or standard double on the bottom and a standard single on the top. Some bunks are available with built in storage such as shelving, cupboard space or drawers underneath.
What is the age range for bunk beds?
Bunk beds are designed for children between the ages of 4 and 16, although children under the age of 6 should not sleep on the top bunk. For older children using the top bunk, there are guard rails on both sides and a fixed ladder for safety and peace of mind.
Are bunk beds suitable for adults?
Primarily bunk beds are designed for children, but there’s no reason why an adult can use a bunk bed occasionally depending on their size. If you plan on using it regularly, you should ensure that the mattresses are suitable enough to support their weight.
What mattresses are suitable for use with bunk beds?
Bunk beds do not require a specific type of single mattress and any regular child’s mattress can be used on a bunk bed as long as the depth does not exceed 18cm when used on the top bunk bed.
When it comes to support and fillings, there are no restrictions on what can be used. Choose from open coil, pocket springs or solid foam mattresses with a range of other fillings such as heat absorbing gel, hypoallergenic natural fibres or pressure relieving latex.
To preserve the mattress and protect against accidents and spills we recommend using a waterproof mattress protector. This helps to prolong the life of the mattress and ensures any warranty isn’t voided by any marks or stains. Also, regular rotating from head to toe and flipping the mattress over will enhance its support and comfort.
Are bunk beds safe?
As long as they are installed, maintained and used properly bunk beds are perfectly safe. All bunk beds sold in the UK must conform to strict safety standards (BS EN 747 – Bunk Beds and High Beds).
To ensure safety please follow the manufacturer’s instructions when assembling and report any issues with the frame as soon as they arise. Make sure any ladders and guard rails are secured and check and tighten all fittings regularly.
Never let children bounce/jump on the bunks and make sure ladders are used properly and not used for play. Its also a good idea to have adequate lighting at night to ensure trips up and down the ladder to the bathroom can be navigated safely.
