Small double mattresses are 4ft (120cm) wide and 6ft3 (190cm) long; 6' narrower than a standard 4ft6 (135cm) double mattress.
How much do small double mattresses cost?
Mattresses prices vary greatly, but it's important that you stick to a budget that you are comfortable when you want to purchase a new small double bed mattress. All mattresses serve the same purpose, but cheap mattresses will not offer the extra comfort and support that a mid to high-end mattress will provide. Choosing the perfect small double mattress for your needs, depends on your budget. At the end of the day, the more you spend, the better the quality you will receive.
How long do small double mattresses last?
Mattresses don't last forever and should be replaced every 8-10 years, however, there are many variables that can influence the life of your mattress. The make-up of the mattress, the materials used and even the weight and sleeping position of each person can influence a beds longevity, support and comfort. Keeping your mattress clean and well aired will prolong the life of your bed, but the biggest thing that can help is to ensure it's rotated or flipped regularly. On average, we spend 8 hours a night in bed; multiply that by 365 days x 10 years and that amounts to 29200 hours of wear and tear your mattress will receive.
Can a double mattress fit on a small double bed?
No. Unfortunately, a double mattress is 6' wider than small double mattresses and if used, would cause the spring system to buckle.
Can you put a new mattress on an old base?
You can, but it's certainly not advisable. Divan bases receive as much wear and tear as a mattress and any dips in the base will cause the mattress to follow them, resulting in the spring unit being distorted. If you have an older divan base and it is in good condition with an even top surface, you could put a new mattress on it and use it in a guest room.
What's the benefit of a small double bed?
A 4ft mattress is an ideal size for smaller bedrooms or a guest room as they take up less space in your bedroom than a double bed and can still sleep two adults comfortably. It's also an ideal sleeping solution for those who find a single bed too small and provides you with extra space to spread out for a good night's sleep.
Choosing the right small double bed mattress
Whether you're buying your first mattress or replacing one you've had for more years than you can remember, it's important to consider your favoured sleeping position as this can affect the amount of support you need. Whether you prefer to sleep on your front, curl up on your side or lie on your back, we're bound to have a mattress that's suitable to meet all of your needs.
Is a small double mattress comfortable to sleep on?
Small double mattresses offer the same support and comfort, compared to the same model in a different size. They're an ideal size if space in your bedroom is limited. They're also a great option for a guest room and can sleep two adults comfortably.
Are pillow top mattresses any good to sleep on?
Pillow top mattresses are a great option for side sleepers as their extra comfort layers allow you to sink into the mattress, relieving pressure in the shoulder and hip areas.Offering maximum comfort, pillow top models are perfect for those who struggle to flip mattresses over, as their one-sided design only requires them to be rotated.
What are memory foam mattresses?
Contained within Hybrid mattresses, memory foam is a layer of varying depths, depending on the mattress and can be combined with any foam interior or spring system. Designed to be temperature sensitive, a memory foam mattress can alleviate pressure points by reacting to body heat and moulding itself to your sleeping position and body shape.
How often do I need to turn a small double mattress?
It's recommended that you rotate a new mattress and flip them over every two weeks for the first couple of months, then every 4-6 weeks thereafter. This helps to even out any wear and tear that the mattress will receive. Alternatively, if flipping a mattress is a problem, you can opt for a one-sided mattress that only requires rotating.
Which small double mattress firmness do I need?
When choosing a new mattress, the firmness is one of the main considerations that sleepers have to make, as it determines the level of comfort and support you receive. If you are one of many side sleepers, you are more likely to need a soft to medium support that responds to your pressure points, such as pillow top or pocket sprung mattresses. For those who change their sleeping position throughout the night, a medium to firm bed would be the best small double mattress for you. Medium firm is renowned for providing the extra comfort and support that your body requires to keep your spine aligned, resulting in the prefect sleeping comfort. For those who sleep on their front or back, we recommend you opt for a firm or an orthopaedic mattress for an extra level of support. Extra firm mattresses are also the best option for heavier people who require an extra level of support.
Why is mattress firmness important?
Not everybody likes to sleep on the same type of mattress. The mattress firmness primarily relates to comfort, but it can have health benefits too. For example, firmer mattresses can offer a greater spine support to sleepers who suffer from back pain during the day to provide a good night's sleep.

Can you clean a small double mattress?
We spend a third of our lives in bed and unfortunately, no matter how careful we are, accidental spillages happen and can ruin the look of your mattress. If an accident does happen, you should always try to clean the stain as soon as it occurs, but doing this right away isn't always possible. So, the best way to tackle any unsightly stains is to use a gentle laundry detergent or warm soapy water, baking soda and a clean cloth. Rinse the cloth in cold water, then dab the stain with the cloth. Sprinkle the baking soda over the stain and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse the cloth with cold water again and dab the stain until it lifts. Repeat this process as many times as necessary, then leave to dry.
