Why Choose an Electric Bed

It’s a fact that only 1% of beds bought in the UK are adjustable beds. However, in Germany, the figure is nearer 20%. So what do the Germans know that we don’t?

Most people in the UK imagine that electric adjustable beds are for the old and infirm. And indeed electric beds are a huge benefit for the bedridden. The multi-hinged base mechanism can accurately follow the contours of the body and, even with the slightest of adjustments, a huge improvement in comfort and support can be created.

There is the obvious benefit of being able to read in bed and raise your feet up after a hard day. The head end can be brought up to almost a vertical position that helps even the frailest of people to climb out.

Most adjustable beds come with slat adjusters that allow you to moderate the firmness of the bed and the mattresses are almost always of a high quality – there is no point in paying for a premium adjustable mechanism and then using a cheap mattress. The manufacturers know this, and because there is often little to choose between one electric bed mechanism and another, great thought is taken to find the “best” electric bed mattress. So almost by definition electric bed mattresses are among the best on the market.

Finally, most adjustable beds can be bought with a massage unit that is used to improve blood circulation and offers great relaxation. You definitely get a “wow factor” with an electric adjustable bed.

So why do so few British people buy electric adjustable beds? The truth is it’s hard to tell. Electric beds start at about £399 – not much more than a normal decent quality single bed – and if you have a chronic medical condition you can reclaim the VAT. So price isn’t the big issue.

My own theory is that the German love affair with the sun lounger carries over to the bedroom. They see the bedroom as a living space in the way that we perhaps don’t. And, in actual fact, a large part of the German market is for manually operated adjustable beds – so for them they don’t just sun bathe on a lounger – they sleep all night on one too -  a staggering one in five of them!

The obvious conclusion is that adjustable beds have benefits for everyone and quite simply we haven’t yet realised the fact. Every trade show I visit, the adjustable bed manufacturers point out to me that any day now the Great British public will wake up to the benefits of adjustable beds. Meantime we continue to wait.
