Rauch Wardrobes versus IKEA PAX

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

For choice, style, versatility and value for money, IKEA PAX extra wide wardrobes are hard to beat .

But I think we have their match: Rauch (German, pronounced like a dog bark with phlegm). 90cm to 350cm, sliding mirrored doors to neat bi-fold hinged doors. Beech to Wenge, tie racks to internal drawers. Rauch has it all.

Over the last 10 days we have built 10 shop displays, 150 wardrobes, and may Ingvar Kamprad strike me (more…)

National Bed Federation AIS Show Telford

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The second National Bed Federation show has just finished at the International Exhibition Centre at Telford.

I popped down to have a look and I must say we had a very enjoyable time. The great thing about the NBF and its relation AIS, (sorry I can never remember what that stands for) is despite the fact you obviously aren’t a member and haven’t a hope in Hades of ever becoming one, everyone is wonderfully friendly to you.

And just because you weren’t part of the original cast of Downton Abbey you can still (more…)

Best Ottoman Bed at Bed Shed

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

My friend Sandra just bought an Ottoman divan bed from Bed Shed at Hillington. £825, choice of colours and matching headboards. She liked the quality, she liked the fact she wouldn’t need a vallance and she had the hots for the salesman who served her. I made that last bit up.

Anyhow, me with 10 bed shops and all, was a bit put out. So today I popped into the Bed Shed at Hillington to find out more. And I was impressed. Actually the mattress had the misfortune of having someone eat their egg and chips on it. But hygiene apart (more…)

EAST COAST BEDlam

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Ok, so further to the last “mass assembly of Scotland’s leading bed experts” in Glasgow on Saturday 27th March it was Edinburgh’s turn to have a taste of what these bed experts had to offer on the dance floor.  So, the scene was set for Saturday 29th May and the East Coast lads were raring to show the West Coast just how a night out should be done….. Dreams Beds in Edinburgh – Other Bed Shops?

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Dreams have recently opened 2 bed shops in Edinburgh, one very close to our Archers Sleepcentre store on Seafield Road and one at Straiton Retail park.

What effect has this new competition had on ourselves who, until this new arrival, were the uncontested bed superstore for Edinburgh, and indeed the premier bed retailer for the whole of the East of Scotland? Modest we are too.

The first thing that has happened is that all the other bed retailers have had to raise their game. The Bed Shop in Leith (a long established independent retailer), for example, has decided to take the mattress bags off their display mattresses! Bed Shed has closed their small branch on Leith Walk and they have upgraded their shopfit at their Seafield Road branch.

Cannock Beds, seeing Edinburgh as the place that all the best bed retailers are trading, have come up from England and also opened on Seafield Road. And so also Bensons for Beds, again on Seafield Road - they have surrounded poor old Dreams.

And the effect on Archers Sleepcentre? I would never have believed this but the initial effect has been to increase sales. What is clear is that if anyone in the East Coast of Scotland wants to buy a bed they are going to get the widest choice by coming to this little half mile strip of bed retailers situated only 1 mile from Edinburgh City Centre. We have 3 bed retailers as next door neighbours and Dreams and Bed Shed are only 400 yards away. All with easy access and easy parking. In the last 3 years the number of beds sold in this area must have tripled!

The recession however has hit Edinburgh hard. The massive flat building programmes around Ocean terminal have halted and the financial crisis has hit Edinburgh harder than most cities. So trade is now suffering. The question is has Dreams and Bensons and Bed Shed etc done their sums right. Undoubtedly some of the independent bed shops, Grove Bedding and Leith Beds come to mind, must be struggling. But they are long established businesses and if they have the will to trade through this recession they should survive. But for the retail chains run by men in suits?

Land of Leather Closures

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Land of Leather stores are starting to close. About one third of the furniture stores including Falkirk and Ayr are to close. A buyer is still being sought for the rest, though I can’t see who would want a leather sofa  business in this climate.

One of our main competitors, Cannock Beds, is having to move fast to find new sites. They had taken concessions within Land of Leather and are now looking to find stand alone sites. We understand that they are opening at Seafield and of course we welcome our new neighbour. Our Edinburgh store will have the best of neighbours with Bensons, Sleepright, Bed Shed, Dreams and now Cannock beds all beside them. Where else would you go to buy a bed in Edinburgh?
