Diamante Leather Bed a Best Seller
Bling must be the new cool. Our new best selling bed is the Black Diamante Faux Leather Double Bed. The Liberace world wide fan club are piling in. You wouldn’t believe what people buy on the internet but I can tell you loads of people are.
It was indeed another internet record week last week and this time it felt especially good. January you see has been a terrible month. The VAT rise on 4 Jan 2011 had brought forward purchases last year and so like for like bed sales comparison post Boxing Day was depressing. I thought to send all our sales staff to Mary Portas and be re-programmed.
But February is proving much better and I have forgotten that idea. Mary will be relieved.
What pleases me most is the robustness of our bed business. I have to admit our competitors took us to the cleaners in January. Some of the prices on offer were out of this world. I kept looking at margins thinking one of us is operating on a parallel universe. The universe of the perpetual motion machine, the low cost wind turbine and the get yourself a six pack 2 minute a day training regime. I did pause to think if this universe might really exist.
We are running a 20% off Sealy beds and mattresses promotion at the moment. We really are discounting the prices by 20%. So maybe it is our time to be seen in that universe. But it’s for 2 weeks and that’s it. These prices won’t pay the rent.
So what next? Of course being a value retailer we plan to keep our prices as low as we can. Our plan though is to look harder at the quality. No-one, Gerald Ratner apart, admits to selling cheap rubbish, but when times are tough some offers fall under the Ratners total crap banner.
My feeling is that people are becoming more discerning. Bling may be the new cool, but cool bling, not crap bling. No-one could say our Saturn Bling Cherry Weave double headboard at £139.99 is anything but quality. The diamante adornments look just like real diamonds (not). They are nice but they’re not going to fool the missus / mistress.
We are out there looking for good kit at great prices. So watch this space. There is going to be some great new products coming on to our shop floors very soon.
