About Archers Sleepcentre

We sell divan beds, bed frames, mattresses and bedroom furniture. Our bed showrooms are extensive and we show the widest choice of beds from super king divans to fold away guest beds.

Each store has its own warehouse on site. So if you have the appropriate transport you can take your new bed or mattress away today. Of course we also offer a UK nationwide delivery service.

We are a family owned company, based in Scotland, and our stores are located mainly on retail parks in Scotland. We sell brands such as Silentnight and Sealy at the lowest possible prices. Our bed shops are low cost “warehouse type” operations. Warm and well lit, but inexpensively fitted out and we look to pass our cost savings to you.

We are bed experts. Our staff go through a rigorous training regime and they know about beds. How do we know? Because each month we test everyone! Second best is not an option for an Archers bed sales consultant.

Our History

Archers Sleepcentre was set up by Ian Archibald in 2001. Ian had previously worked for a national bed retailer, and previous to that a UK pine furniture specialist. For almost 10 years he was frustrated with what he saw was counterproductive methods used by these entirely reputable companies to bring product to the market.

Complex computer systems that didn’t work. Adversarial relationships between the retailer and the supplier. No joined up thinking, and a blame culture that oscillated between retailer and supplier, and very often even “difficult” customers. A bed that would take a supplier an hour to make, could take six weeks before the customer would receive it. How could that be? You don’t need to be that difficult a customer to expect better!

And from the frustration of knowing there was a better way, Archers Sleepcentre was born. The basic rule at Archers is “stop pushing water uphill”. If the computer says no, switch it off. If a bed takes 6 weeks to come, make sure you carry sufficient stock. If a bed frame side rail breaks, replace it today - replacing it in 3 weeks takes just as much effort. And if you are going to run a promotion on a bed make sure the supplier has stock before you start. None of this is rocket science. But you would be surprised how hard it is to tell a computer to say yes.

It is fair to say that despite this extensive experience, success didn’t immediately follow. In January 2002, Scotland was hit by a huge storm, and 6 months after trading commenced, the shop front at the original Glasgow store at Great Western Rd  blew in. For a while Archers Sleepcentre was more open than usual  - 15 feet more open to be precise. At least we got our picture in the paper.

Success did follow however, and the operation is now rapidly expanding based on sound profits and internally driven growth. The bed market is a small one. Market share needs to be won, and the Archers philosophy is proving itself by winning its share. The ultimate winner, of course, is the bed buying public.
