(*) The thickness of wire in a spring, its gauge, is most often quoted in imperial units. The thickest gauge is typically 12.5 (ie the wire diameter is 1/12.5 inches) and is often called "orthopaedic". Wire thicknesses can go down to 1/18th of an inch, 18 gauge, found in the more sensitive pocket sprung mattresses, and all things being equal the higher the gauge the softer the mattress.
